Chapter 36

Walking down a quiet street that ended in a cul-de-sac, Kate excitedly smacked her palm against Nick’s shoulder. Turning to her, he raised his eyebrows as she pointed to a house at the end of the street.

The house was nearly the size of a mansion, outlined in gray cobblestones and punctuated with floor-to-ceiling window panes. A surrounding thin layer of trees gave it the illusion of privacy. Embellished with mulch and purple asters, a small koi pond decorated the front lawn.

“Please!” Kate clasped her hands together and clutched them beneath her chin, begging.

Nick looked the house over as if he could see through the walls and deem it safe. Apprehension threatened to tug him to the ground, but when he turned to Kate, she gave him puppy eyes. Her lips turned down in a dramatic frown, and her eyelashes batted in rapid succession. Nick did not stand a chance.

“Fine, one night,” Nick said and rolled his eyes, trying not to smile. Kate raced up the brown, stone staircase and stopped short at the ornate, cream-colored, front door.

Glancing around the neighborhood, Nick looked for power lines standing tall in the distance. When there were none, he surmised the electricity must be run underground, protected from the elements, which gave him a glimmer of hope that the power running to these houses was still going strong.

Taking a deep breath, Kate reminded herself that they must be cautious. Nick unsheathed his machete, and Kate produced her revolver. Resting his hand on the doorknob, Nick paused to look at her, awaiting affirmation. She nodded, and he swung the door open.

Clearing this home took much longer than the one they stayed in the first day they met. Almost three times the size and double the number of rooms, it seemed hours before they considered the house safe.

Every room Kate walked into made her love the house more. Each area was well-designed, spacious, and beautifully decorated. She wished they could stay there forever.

In the kitchen, they put together a quick bite to eat. It seemed criminal to prepare plain green beans from a can in such a well-appointed kitchen, but hunger and exhaustion impeded any hopes of a lavish meal.

Nick and Kate retired to the master bedroom which housed a California king-sized bed with a bench at the end, two wardrobes, two armchairs, a bookcase, and a vanity. Two French doors opened up into a master bath with a jacuzzi tub and intricate floor tiles. Kate whirled around and fell into the giant bed, the goose-down duvet swallowing her up.

“This place is amazing,” Kate marveled.

Nick sat at the foot of the bed and pulled the first aid supplies from his backpack.

“It’ll do. Where are you hurt? There’s blood coming through your shirt.” Nick had not meant to be short with her. He was tired, but mostly, he worried about how much she loved this place. Afraid to get too comfortable, he knew at any moment they might have to leave, fleeing for their lives.

“You’re no fun,” Kate pouted, standing up and lifting her shirt.
